OUR Mission

Tuungane (toon-GAH-nay): “Let us come together!”

The mission of The Tuungane Project, led by peace expert Marcel Serubungo, is to equip leaders in indigenous churches to build resilient communities through non-violent conflict resolution and leadership development.

This one Swahili word, Tuungane, captures our mission. In a country divided by so much, many forms of support may come and go, but it is our conviction that the Christian church will remain in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In DRC, millions are living in armed conflict and losing hope.

The Tuungane Project, led by Marcel Serubungo, is working to bring Gospel transformation through workshops for the restoration of Christian leaders and the promotion of peace and reconciliation among divided communities.

We are serving those suffering most: children, youth, women, and the elderly. We have worked in settings like churches, schools, and Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps. The Tuungane Project is also working in trauma recovery and humanitarian assistance, all to see transformation in communities through local churches.

Marcel’s Story

The Tuungane Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Kivu region is developed and directed by Marcel Serubungo.

Marcel was born and raised in the eastern DRC and lived through the Kivu conflict and its aftermath. Marcel’s early work with humanitarian organizations, then as an ordained pastor, thrust him into the center of the suffering faced by so many in Africa’s Great Lakes region. After decades of work with World Relief and World Vision, Marcel saw the need for a holistic response to the spiritual, social, and economic challenges faced by countless communities in Congo.

Through his ministry networks and graduate training in peace and conflict management, Marcel began holding workshops through local churches. The workshops continue to train leaders to advance holistic restoration and sustainable peace in their communities. The Tuungane Project is working through these networks to develop programs in trauma healing and humanitarian assistance.
